ScienceofSpeed Sport Clutch for Honda
S2000: Increased power capacity while maintaining a light pedal effort
and smooth engagement. |

After a year of development,
ScienceofSpeed has released the Sport Clutch for Honda S2000. Since
2002, ScienceofSpeed has been selling and installing various aftermarket
clutches for the S2000. In our experience, aftermarket clutches have
often had too stiff pedal pressure or too harsh of engagement. By
testing pressure plate and clutch designs, ScienceofSpeed has developed
a clutch that offers a factory like pedal pressure and smooth
engagement. |

drivability: |
|
The clutch is an important interface to
your car. If the clutch is difficult to press, or difficult to engage,
the enjoyment in driving the car suffers. The ScienceofSpeed Sport
Clutch uses a pressure plate design that is very similar to the factory
clutch - only minimally firmer, it gives an increased sporty feel. In
addition, the clutch disc design results in engagement that is crisper
than the factory clutch, but very easy to manage and allows smooth
engagement. The added benefit of lighter pedal pressure is reduced
strain on the engine thrust bearings (the bearings that absorb thrust
from the clutch when the pedal is depressed) resulting in increased
engine durability. |

performance: |
The ScienceofSpeed Sport Clutch for Honda
S2000 is rated at 300 lb/ft at the flywheel (approximately 255 lb/ft wheel
torque or 400+ wheel horsepower) - the perfect pair for the majority of
supercharger and turbocharger applications. However, the clutch is also
equally suited for use on all-stock and otherwise naturally aspirated
S2000s. This increased capacity has been achieved by adjusting clamping
force of the pressure plate (it is increased 33%) while adjusting the
geometry of the diaphragm spring as to not affect the drivability in the
clutch. In addition, the disc is produced to cope with the additional
capacity of the clutch with a bonded and fastened high strength Kevlar /
fiber / organic liner. The disc also offers fully caged damper springs
on the front and rear of the disc with high strength fasteners used.
If capacity beyond 300 lb/ft is required, ScienceofSpeed offers the
ScienceofSpeed
Billet Twin Carbon Clutch. |

quality: |
There are some very significant
differences between the components utilized in the ScienceofSpeed Sport
Clutch and other aftermarket clutches. In our experience, the Chinese components used in other
manufacture's aftermarket clutches have been inconsistent (clamping force varying
20+%) and visible short cuts in materials, design, and assembly have been
evident. Using high quality Japanese made components, including the disc
sourced from Honda's original equipment manufacture, we are able to use
the highest quality components available. The slight increase in cost of
using these high quality components is by far justified due to the
expense involved in removing and replacing a clutch in the S2000.
In addition, we have designed the clutch travel to be similar to factory
- unlike other aftermarket clutches, little or no change to the master
cylinder is required for installation.
There are some design features especially evident in the ScienceofSpeed
Sport Clutch disc that are not found in any other manufacture's clutches
as shown below. |

The ScienceofSpeed Sport Clutch is
compatible with any aftermarket flywheel designed for use with stock and
aftermarket clutches. This includes the
Competition Clutch
flywheel and ACT flywheel.
A new release and pilot bearing is required for clutch installation.
ScienceofSpeed offers high quality OEM Nachi bearings. |
