The Cantrell Studios Widebody
Conversion is a complete departure from conventional
aftermarket body panel production using state-of-the-art composites
design, materials, and manufacturing.
factory fitment & design:
All panels prototypes were
built on factory body panels to insure proper fit and finish. Multi-axis
bracing was used to insure uniformity during tooling manufacturing.
Tooling (molds) was created with epoxy resin instead of polyester. While
this increases the cost and difficulty of manufacturing, it insures that
dimensions and fit of the resulting parts are correct. The
goals for the production products were to maintain very high quality fit
and finish, to produce a very strong but lightweight part, and to keep
costs down.
This attention to detail in design leads to the most factory-like
fitment quality compared to any NSX aftermarket panel from any company
and any country.
engineering sets it apart:
A number of unique features engineered into the design sets the
widebody conversion apart. The rocker (side skirt) panels are the first
for the NSX that do not require drilling or modification of the body.
Factory bolting locations are used. Complete integral bracketry was
developed to offer stock fit and finish with out the damage to the body
from the drilling that other aftermarket panels require. The available integrated
billet race filler is the same type and manufacture as featured on the
McLaren F1 supercar. Available high-density polymer chin guard inserts,
as found on recent Lamborghini automobiles, protect the front bodywork
of the car from steep inclines.
manufacturing:
High technology composite manufacturing is utilized. These bodies are
manufactured by a competition race body manufacture.
The parts are offered via two types of production. Panels
are offered in FRP as well as full vacuum bagged lightweight carbon
fiber/Nomex honeycomb/epoxy construction.
The FRP constructed panels feature strategic
carbon fiber placement for strength and rigidity. The construction
features strong FRP cloth and is unlike anything currently offered for
the NSX. Fitment and strength is far superior to any existing
aftermarket fiberglass panels offered.
Nothing close to the quality and strength of the carbon fiber/Nomex
honeycomb/epoxy construction option is currently offered for the NSX.
Using the same technique and materials employed for professional
motorsports, these panels set several new precedence for aftermarket
body panels offered not only for the NSX, but any production automobile.
This type of construction is only seen in aerospace applications and
super exotics such as the Ferrari Enzo. The focus on these parts is
performance. Unlike other "just for looks" carbon fiber parts, these are
functional race-quality replacement panels that set a new first - weight
reduction beyond the extremely light aluminum bodywork of the NSX.
pricing:
Despite the high level of quality, the widebody conversion is priced
below existing complete body conversions for the NSX.
key advantages:
1. the most advanced aftermarket body panel construction and quality
available
2. features such as epoxy tooling and carbon fiber reinforcement result
in very high strength, consistent, and proper fitting panels
3. lightweight construction (vacuum bagged carbon/epoxy results in
approximately 30lbs of weight savings)
4. advanced mounting hardware bracketry does not require drilling into
the body and uses factory mounting points - all existing aftermarket
bodywork requires drilling and modification of the body
5. accessible jacking points allow easy access for raising car and keeps
body above floorpan away from damage - most existing aftermarket
bodywork sits below the frame, exposing itself to damage.
The conversion option is
available to replicate the JGTC 2003 GT NSXes from Japan. The fenders
and bumper is stretched several inches for additional wheel clearance
and aggressive stance. A less aggressive widened front fender kit
is available for use with stock-dimension bumpers (soon to be released).
widebody conversion system:
The widebody conversion bodywork kits include the wide front bumper,
wide front fenders, wide rocker panels and mounting kit, quarter panels,
bumper molding kit, and required mounting hardware.
widebody conversion options:
Various options are available for the widebody conversion including
a billet race filler, chin guard inserts, and lighting.

Professional motorsports
quality bodywork constructed from carbon fiber and Nomex honeycomb
for high strength and durability with minimal weight. Carbon fiber
weave is optimized for high tensile strength and weight
optimization. The layup results in irregular weave patterns. Weaves
are concealed by primered surface - this bodywork is intended for
painting. Honeycomb reinforcement features matrix properties which
results in similar strength to a solid substance with substantial
less mass. Parts are manufactured with epoxy resin. Epoxy resin has 2.5-3 times the flexural modulus of polyester
resin. This results in much higher resistance to impact, structural
rigidity, and consistency. Despite the additional cost and
difficulty in working with this material, the benefits are
tremendous. This construction results in lower mass than
the factory aluminum bodywork with up to 5 times increase in
strength. Body panels are vacuum bagged. Under high vacuum, excess
resin is evacuated resulting in optimal weight. |

Utilizing the same
construction techniques above, components are manufactured with a
focus on maintaining consistent weave pattern while optimizing
weight. This highly technical and labor intensive process requires a
significant increase in manufacturing effort before, during, and
after production. Body panels post manufacturing are screened,
prepped, refinished, and polished. This process alone doubles the
time required for production alone. Available by special arrangement
