Description

With 10 years of experience, ScienceofSpeed has designed, tested, and put into use some of the most impressive NSX engines. ScienceofSpeed has designed and built engines for applications varying between the street driven NSX to the offroad NSX powered race car.

Our naturally aspirated engine program is intended for customers who wish to repair their existing engines and retain factory specifications - and for customers who wish to maximize power naturally aspirated with out the addition of superchargers or turbochargers.

about naturally aspirated tuning:
The factory NSX engine is fairly well tuned from Honda with 270 hp / 3.0L (90 hp/L) and 290 hp (90.6 hp/L). While the gains from naturally aspirated tuning is generally lower than forced induction tuning - naturally aspirated engines can offer increased power and throttle response.

Naturally aspirated gains can be achieved in four ways:

  • increasing induction efficiency
  • increasing exhaust efficiency
  • increasing displacement
  • increasing pressure & energy use in cylinder

With these engines, ScienceofSpeed recommends a high flow induction system, header & exhaust system.

our process: through in house research and development, we have perfected the best formula of component materials and design, machining and clearances, and assembly techniques. Each engine is built in our climate controlled engine assembly room where each component is measured and recorded as a part of our blueprinted assembly process. In addition to the high performance components used by ScienceofSpeed, each engine is rebuilt using all new seals, gaskets, and bearings.

engine management requirements: ScienceofSpeed recommends programmable engine management systems for all engines except engines that are built to factory specifications (3.0L or 3.2L).

fuel requirements: the compression of the engines can be modified based on the fuel used. "Premium" 91 octane (rated by R+M/2) is recommended for engines up to 11:1 CR. For compressions above 11:1, a higher test fuel must be used. Compressions can be increased for applications that will allow high test race fuel or alcohol blended fuels to be used under all conditions.

suggested options: Each engine is assembled with a new factory timing belt. In addition to the options available to each stage, we also recommend considering the following items depending on age & application:

  • factory timing belt tensioner or ScienceofSpeed

Options

Stage 1 - 3.0L - enpp-2291

It is ideal for customers looking to repair damaged or refresh worn engines. The stage 1 3.0L engine is designed for 1991-94 M/T & A/T and 1995-2005 A/T engines. It may be used with the factory ECU and fuel system if compression is not adjusted. Increased compression and upgraded camshafts may be added to increase power by approximately 30 hp (high test fuel & engine management required).

Precision blueprinted assembly including pistons, cylinder head studs, and new seals, gaskets & bearings. Stage 1 includes:

  • MLS head gasket set
  • ARP head stud set
  • complete new genuine factory cylinder head seal set, cylinder block seal set, bearing set, & timing belt

  • cylinder block: surface deck, machine, bore, & hone cylinder sleeves to size
  • clean & inspect cylinder heads, cylinder block, connecting rods, and crankshaft

  • blueprinted assembly: set ring gap, measure and adjust clearances, record weights, provide specification sheet

  • precision balancing of rotating assembly (recommended for racing applications)


Stage 2 - 3.2L - enpp-2292

Engine ideally suited for original 3.2L engines & 3.0L engines interested in increased displacement and power. Engine designed for either 3.0L or 3.2L engines (3.0L engines will be increased in displacement to 3.2L by the increase in cylinder bore diameter from 90 - 93mm). Increased compression and upgraded camshafts may be added to increase power by approximately 35 hp (high test fuel & engine management required).

Precision blueprinted assembly including pistons, cylinder head studs, and new seals, gaskets & bearings. Stage 2 includes:

  • MLS head gasket set

  • nodular ductile iron dry cylinder sleeves

Stage 3 - 3.5L - enpp-2293

The ultimate naturally aspirated engine for the NSX. Compatible with either 3.0L or 3.2L engines, the 3.5L stroker engine is the ultimate engine for your high end naturally aspirated application! Increase in displacement achieved from enlarged bore (93mm) and increased stroke (78mm factory stroke is increased to 86mm) provided by the 4130 steel crankshaft and connecting rods.

Up to 60 hp gains using factory induction, camshafts, and 91 octane. Up to 140 hp gains using ScienceofSpeed Individual Throttle Body Induction, Toda Type C camshafts, and high test fuel.
