Cometic multi layer steel (MLS) head gaskets replace the factory head gasket. By using the same design as the factory gasket with a thicker inner layer, combustion chamber volume is increased. Increasing chamber volume decreases compression ratio. The factory compression ratio is 11:1. The reduced ratio with the recommended gasket thickness is approximately 9.7:1. The increased crushed thickness is made up of a new five layer design increasing the thickness from the factory .030" thickness to .075". This reduced compression ratio allows more aggressive pressure and tuning for power levels up to 380 wheel horsepower and more.
ScienceofSpeed recommends a properly prepared sleeved short block with forged low compression pistons installed for power levels above 400 wheel horsepower.
