The NSX-R and Type-S performance variants of the NSX featured a mesh engine cover designed to reduce weight and still allow protection of the hatch glass from debris. This popular modification for the NSX has gotten even better from ScienceofSpeed, now manufactured from dry carbon fiber.
Design: Starting with a genuine factory NSX-R cover, ScienceofSpeed scanned and reverse-engineered it to produce an exact replica of the factory part. The model was then optimized for strength and weight reduction in CAD. Dry (pre-preg) carbon fiber was selected for its optimal strength and weight savings. This material uses carbon fiber that is pre-impregnated with resin. The part is then cured in a large autoclave. This manufacturing process is typically reserved for applications like aerospace and high-end motorsports because of the cost. However, the benefit is a high strength-to-weight ratio that exceeds metal.
Manufacturing: To ensure high tolerance, strength, and weight savings, the parts are produced in a CNC-machined and polished aluminum mold with a compression die. Autoclaved parts are then trimmed by a CNC router to ensure perfect fitment. Bonded aluminum plates where the hinges attach ensure durability. Both the resin and the German-made matte clear coat are UV-stable and designed to withstand engine compartment temperatures.
Lastly, an aluminum mesh, designed by ScienceofSpeed to replicate the factory mesh dimensions, is powder-coated satin black, then bonded to the cover with high-temperature epoxy.
Optimized weight & strength: The result is a part that is nearly as stiff as the factory NSX-R metal cover while being less than half the weight.
