The factory NSX magneto-rheological (MR) shock absorbers are known to prematurely fail. Symptoms include reduced or completely eliminated damping effect (the car pogos or has an extremely harsh ride) which can result in very poor handling and poor ride comfort. When the shocks are inspected, shock fluid can be seen on the shaft and covering the shock absorber and surrounding suspension components.
After observing these failures, ScienceofSpeed sent a factory shock absorber to AST x Moton Suspension in the Netherlands, a high-end motorsports shock absorber manufacturer, for inspection to understand the problem. It was determined that the accelerated wear was caused by the stiff top mount increasing side load on the relatively short internal shock shaft top guide. The premature wear of the top guide allows axial play of the shock shaft, resulting in failure of internal seals
ScienceofSpeed has developed a plug-and-play replacement for the factory shock absorber with our partner AST x Moton. The MR design is replaced with AST's high-quality, motorsports-grade monotube shock absorber, which is compatible with the stiff factory top mount, spring, and other factory shock absorber accessories.
Aside from a more durable design, the AST shock absorbers offer significantly improved motion control, even compared to a good-condition factory shock absorber. Aside from improved suspension performance, the high-speed damping tuned to the factory springs results in a smoother ride, eliminating the chassis shake experienced with factory shock absorbers when driving over uneven pavement.
The kit includes everything you need to replace your failing factory shock absorbers, including a tool set developed by ScienceofSpeed to disassemble the factory shock absorber so that the components can be transfered to the new shock absorbers.
The AST shock absorbers outperform the factory shocks in ride quality, motion control performance, durability, and adjustability, and are now also available for less than half the price of the factory assemblies.
